We were looking for an SS but the initial cost was way out of our budget, we dont want to be restricted to making this car completely original, I like the way the 68 Chevelle Malibu look from behind and I like the way the 1969 Chevelle Malibus look from the front - its kinda like building a perfect woman - like taking Jennifer Lopezes rear end and putting it on Paris Hilton with Pamela Andersons Bumpers..anyway -- - I might be putting a 69 front grill assembly on this 68 I also have a set of 1969 Chevelle doors that I might be using to eliminate the vent windows - if it was an SS it would be stupid to screw up a 1968 SS Chevelle which sells for up around $20,000.00 to $100,000.00 - depending on the condition. This Malibu will be built to go Fast and look descent. It already makes heads turn and it looks like a pile of crap. I want it to be a 10 second car - so since this Malibu weighs around 3500 pounds a guy at Speed o Motive told me I will need 700 horse Power to get 600 hp to the rear wheels to get 10 sec, 1/4 miles.. so that means spending around $11,000 on a big block. yeah right -- My wife laughed when I told her that .. I will be Buying stuff from places like The Car Shop in Orange, CA and The Original Parts Group in Huntington Beach, CA - Its the way to go for quality repro parts. They have every part, nut and bolt for all Chevelles from 1964 -1973. I havent had much luck on ebay lately -the stuff I have bought is going to be going back up for sale on www.oldcarlocator.com . The body needs some work but not much - I went to a place locally called - Affordable Classics in Torrance CA, to get a price on getting the glass in the doors adjusted and they want to charge me $150.00 per door just to look at them and I have to wait 3 weeks to make an appointment -- Yeah Right.. those guys are the biggest rip off out there.. They can kiss my ass- - I cant see spending that kind of money for basically nothing- they have tons of customers spending up to $200,000.00 on mustangs, cudas, chargers, Comaros and other classic cars.. those people are sick in the head.. The Motor: I had Francos Automotive in Hawthorne 310-679-1972 tune it up for me, they do awesome work and dont rip their customers off like some other places Ive been to. Now I need to find a set of good headers - I eventually will be building a big block for this project - but that will be when I hit the lotto or if someone wants to build me one for real cheap. lol. The Rear End: I will eventually build a killer Ford 9" rear end for this Chevelle. But for now I talked to Frank at South Bay Truck and 4x4 service in Hawthorne about putting a posi unit in the stock 8.2" - 10 bolt rear end he said he would do the work if I bring him the parts for around $500.00 and it should work killer up to 600 hp. A little bit ABOUT CHEVELLES: The Chevrolet Chevelle was a mid-sized automobile from Chevrolet debuting in 1964. It was produced from 1964 through 1977 and was one of General Motors most successful cars. Chevelle models ranged from economical family cars to powerful coupes and convertibles. The Malibu was at first the top trim level of the Chevelle line, and it replaced the Chevelle name entirely after 1977. The Chevelle chassis (based on the reengineered GM "A" platform) provided the platform for the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, a very successful model itself.
The Chevelle was intended to compete with the similarly sized Ford Fairlane, and to return to the Chevrolet lineup a model similar in size and concept to the popular 1955-57 models. Early design photos show what would eventually be the Chevelle wearing Nova nameplates, the name that was used for the top trim level in the smaller Chevy II series. From 1964-69, the Chevelle was the basis for the similar Beaumont, a re-trimmed Canadian model sold by Pontiac dealers.
Four-door hardtops were available from 1966 though 1972. A two-door station wagon was available in 1964 and 1965 in the bottom-line Chevelle 300 series.
A utility version of the Chevelle station wagon, the El Camino, was part of the lineup. The El Camino outlived its passenger car counterpart until its demise in 1987 |
